Some years ago, I happened on several Ebay auctions of blue and white covered jars and bowls which were part of the Hoi An Hoard. The description said they were 500 years old and had been recovered from the bottom of the South China Sea. I did some quick Internet reading on the Hoi An Hoard and my interest was sparked. I bought several lots of the beautiful pottery which had rested on the sea floor since before Columbus came to the New World. (From reading Dragon Sea I now know that they are pieces of lesser interest and beauty!)I recently read that a book had been written about the salvage operation. I quickly ordered Dragon Sea. I read it just as quickly. The story of the Hoi An Hoard is a well written, fascinating tale full of bad guys, good guys and really over worked guys. It is the tale of fortunes won and fortunes lost by gambling on the sea and its hidden treasures. Author Frank Pope, who was actually involved in the Hoi An operation, weaves a quick moving story with wonderful characters. The best part is that those characters are real people -- each with an agenda of his own. The book is filled with wonderful detail -- from the spraying of the beer girls to the skin conditions of the saturation divers who worked for more than a month at incredible depths. But Pope's very best descriptions are of being caught at sea when the Dragon Strikes and the crew and barge are caught in the teeth of a major typhoon. You feel as if you are really there -- and are glad you're not. Pope teaches about sunken treasure, saturation diving,archeology and the politics of academia with ease.I no more than put the book down than my husband snatched it up. He read deep into last night and awoke this morning with his glasses still perched on the end of his nose. Two thumbs up from our household! P.S. I treasure my 500 year old jars from the bottom of the South China Sea even more now that I know the amazing story of suffering, intrigue and greed which brought them to me.
There are already plenty of great reviews on this book so I won't repeat what has already been said. Basically, this is the best wreck/ true adventure book I've discovered since Shadow Divers. Pope does a very good job of weaving a readable narrative that brings the players to life without a major bias towards one or another of them. Particularly interesting are some of the side stories that he weaves into the narrative, discussing little-known aspects of the maritime archaeology trade and professional diving. Great travel read!
Will be going to Vietnam this year and found this to be very interesting. A different take on what is usually given on the history of Vietnam. I was fascinated by the way China was so deeply involved in Vietnam. The author presented his characters as interesting people, gave very detailed technical facts about the dives that were mostly understandable and wrote with a wonderful enthusiasm about his story.
Being an old, U.S. Navy veteran, and an ex-diver, I could relate to everything in the book. I've been in some of those situations and the book really brought back some old memories, some of which I would have liked to forget.
The author Frank Pope explains in detail the amount of work undertaken to retrieve the artefacts from the sunken trade ships and the resulting disappointments regarding the sale of the recovered items.Recommended reading for collectors and historians interested in Asian ceramics.

Very good read but really could have used photos. I understand that maybe legal rights were involved but photos really would have helped.
This is an incredible book, packed with facts and tensions. The true account of finding and recovering a massive pottery hoard on a sunken ship off Vietnam is told by the manager of the diving teams.We learn, among other things, that the aqualung was invented by my childhood hero Jacques Cousteau, with an engineer who produced his plans. We are told the history of Vietnamese reigns and takeovers by Chinese, the differences in the ceramics industries of both nations, and why you don't want to flood the market with pottery for auction. We learn about the evolution of deep sea diving and how the body responds to pressures and different air mixtures; how the innovation which allowed divers to live for weeks under deep sea pressure and walk around on the seabed suddenly opened up the seafloor for exploration and exploitation (as well as imagined habitats).And then we learn what it's like to be on a massive, laden barge anchored at four points in a severe storm at sea. The fussiness and strict discipline of marine archaeology (unsettlingly spelt archeology in my copy, is that American? Looks like the study of arches). Compounding the stresses we get to understand the privateers of modern day, in it to win it. The costs absorbed by such a vast and dangerous operation mean that museums can't, just can't, pay for deep-sunken wrecks to be recovered. And the financial balancing pushes divers and their managers to work far beyond the limits of what is safe or sane, in a country with no regulation.If you have previously read about the recovery of the Mary Rose you will be fascinated to read about the extra challenges posed by the Hoi An shipwreck; those with no prior experience of the topic may find this book a little too technically detailed. The author is writing from his specialty, with great clarity, and the line drawings help us understand exactly what is going on underwater and in the archaeological / business project. So I would recommend jumping in and enjoying the book.I borrowed this book from the Royal Dublin Society Library. This is an unbiased review.
