Gr 6 Up—A graphic memoir about competitive ice skating, growing up, and coming out. Walden spent much of her youth on the ice, at practices and competitions, and in locker rooms among friends, frenemies, and competitors. In this deeply personal reflection, the author/illustrator is unflinching in her examination of what drove her passion for the sport, the embarrassments and experiences that marked pivotal moments in her development, and how she eventually came out to family and friends as a young teen. The art is economical, with a simple indigo and white palette with very occasional splashes of yellow, lending the book an appropriately cold tone; readers will shiver with empathy as Walden steps onto the rink in the early morning before the sun rises. While her drive and commitment to being the best athlete is evident (at one point, she describes sleeping in her practice clothes on top of her blankets, not allowing herself to get warm so that the early morning transition would be easier), the details about some of her relationships are held at arm's length and only hinted at, most notably the strained relationship with her mother. A scene in which a male tutor sexually harasses Walden and attempts a physical assault is affecting and may spark deeper discussion. Her first romantic relationship is both tender and heartbreaking. I'm a fan of slice of life/memoir graphic novels and Spinning didn't disappoint. If that's up your alley it's definitely worth a read. Queer people in particular will resonate with it, but also people that did team sports but felt they couldn't leave even though they'd lost the passion. It's got a lot of layers and is done very well.

There is a self-reflective honesty in this memoir which as much as anything, to me, was about lack of communication, perhaps ability to communicate, in a family. It is a real reminder to parents - show up for your kids. Don't push, don't be a stage mom. Just be there. Be present. Show up. Listen. Love.

Wow, this is a heartbreaking book. Knowing the creator personally made it even rougher. But it is a very good read. Beautiful art.

It’s heartbreaking and uplifting in turns, the way most coming out / coming-of-age stories are. It’s also a book that you feel pretty thoroughly, but it won’t traumatize you in the telling. Ugh. Look, I’m trying to write a review that gets across that this story is compelling and sad and funny and beautiful. Read it. It’s very good, okay?

A beautiful memoir. Truly captures coming of age struggles and the many seemingly insignificant yet monumental moments we endure as young adults in academia and sports. Loved it!

Tillie appears as herself, having the knowledge of 12 years of competitive skating. The story thus rightly begins at the first time toe touched ice, to her abandonment of the sport in search of her more creative side (for instance drawing a graphic novel). It’s a period from grade school to pre-collage, and although a lot happens in a youth’s life over that time, Walden infuses the narrative based around a skating figure, and it somehow all falls into place.The characterization mostly focuses around Walden’s views as an adult looking back on her childhood. She, for the most part, bares all and this gives a depth of character to her young self, whether pining over a loved one or the thrill of being on the ice in her element. With competitive figure skating, there is character momentum, a movement of sorts that drives the character in what appears to be the pivotal moments of her life, with all the fears, thrills, ups and downs in a teenagers life. Walden’s cast of characters, friends, teachers, enemies, and lovers is realistically glossed over. The supporting cast is dreamlike and surreal, with the spotlight aimed at only key characters that are almost crystal clear, the type of character that you could easily recognize from real life.The writing is in depth and personal, so it takes a autobiographical tone, sometimes in the past tense, sometimes giving new light on Spinning’s creator. Tied together, as mentioned previously, with figure skating moves as chapter headings (and more directly, the names correspond to life situations). This provides the 12 year framework upon which the graphic novel is hung. The moves become a routine and you can almost hear the adult life coach of modern day Tillie, looking back at her younger self and pushing her from figure to figure. Being autobiographical also allows the narrative to flip between a more experienced version of the character, Tillie, who becomes fictionalized. The story in and of itself is rewarding to a patient reader (and from another reader, if you understand figure skating) and kudos must be given to Walden for an engrossing tale.Spinning by Tillie Walden is a heartwarming tale about the ropes and rinks of life. It conveys a deeply personal message that is bound to touch the heart and warm the soul. With solid writing and a passion for the subject material, Tillie Walden serves a course that all can devour. Be you interested in figure skating, are dealing with high-school trials and tribulations or just in want of a good read, this is a prime example of what can be done within the graphic novel format.

TW: Sexual assault, suicidal ideationThis is a love letter—of sorts—to figure skating. More like, a falling out of love letter with figure skating that is at once beautiful and disconnected.This isn't a tell-all funny story about a girl succeeding in the incredibly competitive world of mid-level figure skating. It's a person processing her emotions of a formative time in her life, and her love-hate relationship to figure skating and everything that revolved around it.Much of the story is told through the narrator's voice instead of dialogue as she struggles with feelings of inadequacy despite her success, her sexuality (mostly having other people come to terms with it), an absentee and uncaring mother, and feeling lost and adrift in a sea of people who seem to have it together. Tillie's narration only enhances the disconnect I felt during the story, and the stark graphics only emphasized her isolation even when she was surrounded by friends and fellow skaters.It's not an easy read.It's not meant to be.While I was hoping for a little more resolution at the end, I enjoyed it all the same.

It's more of a 3.5 for me, but I'm impressed by the level of writing skill so I'm rounding up to 4 stars.- If you're a fan of graphic novel memoirs, this follows the checklist well. In the author's note Walden discusses how this story encompassed a feeling more than an experience, and she is completely right about that.- It has #ownvoices lesbian representation.- It's a challenging read in terms of emotional discomfort, due to Walden being a child during the events and therefore not having the best coping strategies or insights. However, Walden doesn't perpetuate or normalize any unhealthy behaviors except for one moment when she states that she "knew" that her attraction towards women is "wrong".- It's such an emotional work that there is not much to be learned about the experience of ice skating, and Walden's dislike of the sport is made clear through how little she shares about the ins and outs of it. If you're looking for a work about skating, I wouldn't recommend that you start here.- Since Walden is still so young, this feels almost like the first volume in a series about her life. I would have preferred learning more about her relationships with her family members and would pick that graphic novel up if she ever creates it.
