I'm going to go ahead and say that any GM that uses a screen should buy this now. Seriously. I mean it when I say I wish I had one years ago. It's weird to me that nobody, including myself, thought of this sooner. Anyone that's used notebooks with the clear plastic pockets on the outside knows exactly what this is: The mutant love-child of a GM screen and a vinyl notebook! It is precisely that. No rings, an extra cover panel, and all pockets all the time!A usage recommendation I have is to print any player-facing information large enough for your grandmother (borrow one if you don't have one) to read without her glasses, so your players can use it without a spyglass. It's only useful if they can read it from their seats. I also keep a list of known NPCs, place names, etc on one of the player-facing panels. When you go a month between gaming sessions, who can remember the blacksmith's name or the tavern last session ended in?One caveat... I would avoid storing printouts in it for long periods of time. I would expect the ink of photocopies or printouts to adhere to the plastic and mark it up when you remove the sheets. I haven't had it happen yet, but I have had probably a dozen GM notebooks ruined by that over the past 30 years of running games.PROS:- It's the perfect size. Since it's made for 8.5"x11" pages (Letter size not Legal size, as some have said) turned sideways, you can see over it well better than traditional taller screens. WAY less having to stand up to see what's going on as players move their miniatures around on the battle mat. Horizontally, it's also the perfect size, in my opinion. Just the right amount of room behind it for all my secret stuff. (Let's be honest, your beer and pumpkin seeds don't REALLY need to be shielded from most players.)- Seems pretty durable. I've only run two sessions with it so far and it's sturdy and seems built to last. (I'll update if it fails)- There's a good amount real estate on this thing for your charts and cheat sheets.CONS:- It's over-priced at $29.99. But not so much that it's not worth paying too much for.- It's VERY shiny, so there can sometimes be some glare issues when trying to read stuff on it. And mine has already scuffed in a couple spots. (both totally minor gripes.)- Since it's notebook technology based, we can expect it to hold up to damage and use just as well. (Probably not REALLY even much of a con.)VERDICT: Are you a GM? You should buy it now. Do you have a GM that you love? (or even like?) You should buy it now. For them. I would give you SO MUCH secret bonus XP for a gift like this!UPDATE: It's been a few years since I bought this thing. It's still going strong. I haven't even had any issues with printout ink adhering to the inside. No cracking in the "hinge" areas or anything. I've bought additional ones as gifts for GM friends and they've loved them. I would add another star after all this playtesting, but they won't let me give it six stars.
This is such a great idea! My husband was delighted to get this for Christmas and couldn't wait to load it with his customized pages of charts, lists, ect.Unfortunately, when he took it out of it's wrapper and opened it for the very first time, the plastic cracked badly at one of the hinges. Such a disappointment! Of course I can, and will, return it for a new one. A pain in the neck, but one I'll put up with for the sake of such a useful, helpful tool for my favorite gamemaster. This would have been a 5-star review if not for that problem.By the way, here's a tip for anyone having trouble inserting paper smoothly into the plastic sleeves. Back your paper with a sheet of cardstock, or even a piece cut from a cereal box to the same size as your paper. Insert both together, then carefully pull out the heavier piece. Keep it handy, you can use it over and over again whenever you want to change what's in a sleeve.
I picked this little screen up as an additional gift for my son's 16th birthday. He loved it!Not only is the material rigid enough to stand easily on its own, but there are also open slots in which he can place maps or notes for whatever campaign they might be playing through.The first thing I thought of when I saw it, was a binder cover. It is like three binder covers hooked together!The functionality is great. He already has maps in the outside slots of the screen. This was a fantastic find and a great gift for any role playing gamer.We would recommend!
First: I purchased one of these only to discover there wasn’t enough area protected by the shields. If your GM (or you) require a lot of room to work with; you will want to consider purchasing two of them.Second: The advice to use the cardstock along with your paper when attempting placement was a HUGE help. I would have struggled with how to place my inserts had I not read that review. The cardstock provided by the manufacturer works just fine for this purpose. So there was no need to go digging for a cereal box, cardstock, etc.Third: Do not expect any work to be done for you as for as content goes. You will need to supply your own artwork (prints) and game system information. The manufacturer does provide 1 8x11 piece of card stock paper. But, I think it very unlikely anyone would elect to use it for anything other than a tool for placement of your own paper.Lastly: The only way to justify the price is by the ingenuity. This product gives you the opportunity to interject house rules, unique art, vital information, and more all based off of your own specific needs. That alone is justifiably worth the price. The materials can’t be near that expensive. As one reviewer already said, “This simply looks to be of the same material you would find on a plain three-ring binderâ€.
As other reviews have said, paper is difficult to insert and remove. I used the card stock product ad that it came with to help insert pages and this worked well enough. I used wet erase markers to write notes on the plastic, this was great for tracking all kinds of things. The folds are stiff and like to fold back up once you have it on the table and you have to work it a little bit to get it to stay where you want. It's not a big deal, but you will spend 3 minutes adjusting it every time.3 stars because after 8 months, one of the plastic linings ripped off. I think it became stuck to the plastic on the opposite side when folded up and then tore apart when unfolded. It still holds paper, but there's a piece of plastic flopping around now.
