I have read all Jack Reacher books by Lee Child, the Peter Ash books by Nick Petrie, and three of the Jane Hawk books by Dean Koontz. I also enjoyed the first John Wick movie. So when I read the description that Lawson Raines was a mix between Jack Reacher and John Wick, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, that intrigue went away quite quickly as I started reading. I don't write reviews for books on Amazon but I actually started marking the pages where I saw horrible writing because I just couldn't get over how bad it was. Here are some of those examples:Pages 105-106, Nick goes to his former partner's house and sees evidence of a break-in. He hears a gunshot upstairs, takes out the first bad guy who yells another guy's name. ""Cassie!" Lawson shouted as he tucked the extra pistol into his pants. Cassie shouted back, "Watch out, Lawson! He's got a gun!" Upon Cassie's cue, a much larger man with a bull neck rounded the wall of the far bedroom. By the look on his face, this man had seen situations like this far more frequently than his partner. He extended a pump-action shotgun in front of him and squeezed the trigger. Cassie giving Lawson the heads-up saved his life. He had managed to dive into the bedroom at the top of the stairs just in time to avoid the oncoming slug." Really?? Cassie's warning saved his life? Because Lawson just took out a bad guy that had a gun, that bad guy yelled another guy's name, and Lawson wouldn't already assume the other bad guy has a gun?? Nope, Cassie yelling, "Watch out, Lawson! He's got a gun" is what saved him.Page 135. Lawson is manipulating the son of a mafia boss to get to the boss. The boss's son says he has proof that his dad met with the chief of police and district attorney. "Dad has a security camera in his office because he doesn't trust anyone, including me, to be in there without him. But he wasn't around when the system was setup. I was. He thought I was at school, so he thinks he and the head of his security are the only ones who can access it. I overheard them discuss the passcode that day and I wrote it down just in case." Riiiight! The mafia boss just happened to verbally say the passcode to his head of security and the son just happened to overhear it. So convenient!Page 141. The author is consistently reminding us what a physical specimen Lawson is. At the end of this chapter, Lawson is in a foot chase with multiple bad guys through LINQ Promenade in Las Vegas and chasing some mafia guys who are in turn chasing the mafia boss's son. "He could tell the men in front of him were starting to slow. This was a log of running and adrenaline dumping. If you weren't in good shape, this would be exhausting. Good thing that wasn't a problem for Lawson." End of chapter. And laughable.Page 174. Lawson and his former partner are in a building waiting for an elevator. Sokolov is the Russian mafia boss, who is different than the above mentioned mafia boss. "...the elevator door dinged and opened to two men who looked an awful lot like some of Sokolov's men who had rushed past them near the downstairs elevator earlier. Sokolov's men registered danger at the same time as Cassie and Lawson did. The wiry, pale-skinned man in a dark suit on the right raised his gun toward Lawson. Lawson instinctively snap-kicked up with his left foot and knocked the gun from the man's hand. But there was no time to get to the other man's gun." Um, watch too many martial arts movies Mr. Wright? I've been training in martial arts for almost 30 years and had no idea that it was that easy to kick the gun out of someone's hand with a snap kick. Good to know.Page 197. Lawson was in jail for 10 years for a crime he didn't commit. His daughter was 2 years old when he went in and he is just now seeing his 12 year old daughter for the first time since then. "Lexi stood from behind the desk where she was sitting. Pure terror on her face. There were two reasons Lawson recognized his daughter immediately after all those years. Of course, from the picture that Cassie had give him the day before. But he wouldn't have even needed that to know it was her, because standing there before him was a younger version of his wife, and instantly he fell in love with her. "Lexi? I..." Lawson didn't have any words." I do, how about yuck? He instantly fell in love with his daughter because she looked like a younger version of his wife?? WTF?These are just a few examples of the horrible writing in this book. I'm no writer and probably couldn't do better but I read a lot of books like this and just couldn't believe how bad the writing was throughout. I was tempted to stop reading it altogether but I pressed forward, hoping it would get better. It didn't.
This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. The storyline is fast-paced and compelling. Descriptive writing that draws the reader into the emotions of Lawson Raines. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.'But sometimes all the mind needs is a seed. Once that seed has been planted, the detective brain has a nurturing way of watering that seed with terrible thoughts, and before you know it, you’ve grown a tree of doubt. Complete with long hanging branches strong enough to tie a rope and hang yourself.''Seed planted. Terrible thoughts watering it. The tree of doubt was on the rise.'No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
This is a HIGH OCTANE, non stop action thriller!! The characters are well defined and engaging. Bradley Wright has once again knocked it out of the park!! Lawson Raines is a great, strong character. Once you start reading, you won’t put it down! Anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series!!! If you haven’t already read the Xander King series, don’t miss out on another GREAT HERO!! Bradley Wright is my favorite author!!!
Usually love this author work, but this time I got a little board with the lack of excitement. Seems likely his best novel and then it stalls. Not sure where this story's going or will proceed in the future, This is not the Kings series by no means…
Bradley Wright hits another home run with his new compelling protagonist, Lawson Raines. And I never thought I could like another one as much as Xander King. He is compelling because despite his bad luck of going to prison for a murder that he did not commit and at the same time losing his loving wife, Raines comes back from his prison experience and blows open a lot of bad stuff in Las Vegas. And allow me to let you in on one of women's trade secrets - we love men who are both strong and affectionate. He is a ruthless adversary to the bad guys. And for the affection ... we see that in Raines as he reconnects with his daughter after so many years and also how author Bradley Wright describes Raines' feelings for his slain wife. The storyline line is great, the descriptions of action scenes are well-written, and despite many obstacles, our hero Lawson Raines prevails in the end. I can't wait for the next in the series.
Lawson lost his daughter for reasons in life, as have others. As did I. In the end, his story will give you a certain amount of chills. As might mine. Not for being a badass, although he is (me not so much), but for his reaction to hearing the words worth more than anything in this world. “Hi Dad.â€
The book was really unrealistic it was simple reading and I realize this is light reading but come on these things were so outrages that I wanted to put the book down or just throw it away. Terrible! I did finish the book but purchase another in this series hopefully the author will not write one!
Although there were a few surprises in the story line I though overall is was too transparent and everything was revealed too quickly. I vert seldom will open a book that is less than 500 pages for that reason.I prefer the added suspense of trying to figure things out before they happen and then being surprised when I was wrong! But maybe I am not the normal reader that this author is trying to reach. I doubt I will buy another book in this series.
