I bought this book to find out more about Vampira. In the intro, the author states that there is very little to write about since there isn't that much information about her. He then goes onto write about the 1950's and how the gay community was treated. I don't have issue with this, but that's not what I bought the book for. I wanted to know more about her! After reading over 100 pages, I gave up. Don't buy this book !
As the author makes clear, this is not a biography of the iconic horror hostess... it's more of a collection of compellingly written essays with Maila Nurmi and her Vampira alter-ego at their center. It's doubtful a definitive bio will ever be written as Nurmi wasn't a terribly accessible individual and the background information that she did share with interviewers was often made up. This book does its best to put Vampira into the cultural context of the staid conservative 1950's-- that she created a persona so subversive and groundbreaking in that era is pretty astonishing; it's little wonder that her fame was short-lived when most Americans were worried about Communists and mushroom clouds and anything new and different was something to be viewed as suspect.

I thought this book would explore the image of the vampire woman in American pop culture or talk about the role of the horror TV host.Instead, this book drowns in self-importance and half-baked ideas.Vampira was a revolt against Dr. Spock's idea about raising children, Arthur Schlesinger's "The Vital Center" and the containment doctrine?I was not convinced.
Great book.
Great book about a cool cult pPersonality. The Non Linear narrative, can be kind of confusing (for a semi-bio) as when one chapter ends, you almost feel that items being alluded to in what you just read would be in the next chapter. But no, they would not be mentioned till later on. Also he makes a lot of references to visual; artist's like Vargas and other artists to , but no accompanying illustration. I realize there were probably rights issues but I feel I had to put down the book to go look up the references more often than I should have. But don't let those minor quibbles discourage you, If you don't wanto trarck down some video documentaries of dubious quality and are interested in Vampira then get this book. It tells you much about America and it's post-war mindset as much as a it does the story of a cool horror show host.
A well researched and in depth look at one of horror/pop culture's most enduring cult figures. Poole shows us that Nurmi was a much more complex icon than we ever realized given her desire to transform the American ideal of womanhood. He also shows us the strangeness of memory as the Vampira character did not reap the financial benefits that her more celebrated descendants did. Sadly, it was far past too late before we knew what we had in Malia Nurmi. Let's hope this seriously scholarly work of Poole balances the scales in some small way.
