I second the negative reviews on this book: this is genuinely the worst textbook I have ever encountered in my many years of schooling.First, the writing is pretentious and cumbersome. For example, "Bond was indicted under this statute when she placed a caustic substance on various objects her husband paramour was likely to touch" (360).Obviously using context clues, the husband is clearly having an affair, but why not use the word mistress? This is a minor example, but in a constitutional law class you will be dealing with complex and historical issues, why make the text any harder than it has to be?Next, it's horribly organized. It jumps from case to note, with the notes having little mini-cases inside of them with very, very little context. Quimbee or Wikipedia will be your friend because you won't have a clue what is going on when reading the textbook. Further, the author won't explain the opinions. Instead, he will write "Justice Breyer stated..." followed by a 300 word quote taken out of context, then interrupted with various quips and annoyances from the author. This continues on and on to the point where you may as well Google the case, as most of these landmark cases can be found online. Finally, the book does not teach. Instead, the book asks ridiculous rhetorical questions that you're apparently supposed to be able to answer with a small excerpt of a case that was terribly edited. The author relies heavily on secondary sources/scholars to explain anything, which again, are terribly hard to read and understand in context as a first-year law student, and honestly it's irrelevant. We want to know what's going on with the case and it's historical implications, not watch you circle-jerk your scholarly peers by name dropping them in your textbook that should have never been published. This book is absolutely terrible. So terrible, in fact, that I took a break from reading it to write this review. If your Professor assigns you this book, good luck!
This is hands down the worst Constitutional Law textbook I have ever had the displeasure of reading. The way the cases are edited down detracts rather than enhances comprehension of the material. It's also quite obvious that the authors have an ideological axe to grind based on how some of the most controversial issues in constitutional law are presented. I understand that some of the most brilliant people are going to disagree on these big issues, but the fact that some of the cases and their framing are presented closer to an op-ed than anything else is infuriating. I read this textbook hoping to grasp some of the most contentious issues in the law, not to puzzle over some genuinely bizzare editorial decions that detract rather than promote an understanding of constitutional law.Set aside some money for a supplement written by a different set of authors because you are going to need it.
This casebook is poorly written. I seriously wonder what the purpose was. Was the goal to make Con Law as confusing as possible? Was the goal to include relatively few cases compared to the abundance of filler? Was the goal to make the largest casebook ever? I think it succeeds on those tasks. Also I ordered this as a rental and my book was badly damaged. The back cover was tearing off the book and someone underlined or used highlighter on ~90% of the text. Evidently they were under the impression that this casebook is a coloring book... or maybe they thought every single utterance was gold. Regardless, my copy was an utter mess.
Most of the 5 star reviews are about the condition of the textbook rather than the content. As a law student who had to use this book, I think it was HORRIBLE. It provides no clear explanations and made the course it much more difficult than it needed to be. I relied heavily on supplemental materials and stopped reading the textbook altogether.
I did not like this book. I think that the cases are so shortened that they fail to adequately provide material to review. I feel sorry that other students may use this book to 'learn'.
I never thought the word "disgusting" could be used to describe a book, but I was gravely mistaken. After opening the box, I sneezed within 4 seconds, followed by another 5 times within 2 minutes. This horrendous book was home to not only dust, but human hair. There was literally strands of hair sticking out of this closed monstrosity. Resisting the urge to vomit, I tried to pull a strand out to find it was stuck to the page. I'm debating setting myself on fire to kill the bacteria. Now not only did I go through a week of class without this book because it took so long to deliver, I have to go through the hassle of returning it and acquiring another.
NOT happy with my purchase. This is a 2018 edition book that looks like it is from 1918. The last 300 pages at least have water marks as it looks like someone spilled an entire gallon of water on this book. Potentially moldy pages. Front cover falling off.
Horrible writing. This is the most aggravating book on Con Law.
