The book is an outstanding introduction to the historicity and reliability of the documents contained in the New Testament. It is a classic written by an eminently qualified scholar of international reputation. HOWEVER, This particular edition (ISBN 978-1483702742) is severely lacking in a couple respects and should be purchased only after considering the trade-offs. First, be aware that F.F. Bruce revised and updated the book to take more recent scholarship into account. This particular paperback edition, despite its 2013 copyright date, is a reprint of a what appears to be the 1959 edition (based upon the date listed in preface). For the more recent revised version, see (for example) ISBN 978-0802822192, with a foreword by N.T. Wright: The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? It is a reprint of the 1981 edition (the 6th edition of the book). Second, the edition reviewed here has no footnotes. For a general reader, that omission may have little significance, but for one who wants to see where Bruce's evidence is actually coming from, it is a huge drawback. The more recent edition noted above (with foreword by N.T. Wright) contains the footnotes. On the other hand, the 98 page edition reviewed here has a slightly larger form factor (bigger pages with more words = thinner book) and the print is somewhat larger than in other editions. The price for this edition is slightly lower than others, and Bruce's conclusion that the New Testament is trustworthy did not change. In sum, this edition may be perfectly adequate for what a reader is looking for, but don't let the 2013 copyright fool you. F.F. Bruce died in 1990, but there are editions available that were updated more recently (by two decades) than 1959. Five stars for the book and F.F. Bruce; Three stars for this older edition without footnotes.
What we need are more men like F.F. Bruce in the church. Much like Dr. Daniel Wallace who is a great teacher today and an American professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. F.F. Bruce was a great New Testament scholar of the 20th century. In this book he lets the reader understand that we can rely on our modern translations of the New Testament because of the amount of ancient manuscripts that support it. He also references not only the early church fathers but also many of the historians of the first and second century that reference many things found in the new testament. Here is the last paragraph of the book from F.F. Bruce..."The earliest propagators of Christianity welcome the fullest examination of the credentials of their message. The events which they proclaim, as Paul said to King Agrippa, not done in corner, and were well able to bear all the light that could be thrown on them. The spirit of these early Christians ought to animate their modern descendants. For by an acquaintance with the relevant evidence they will not only be able to give to everyone who askes them a reason for the hope that is in them, but they themselves, like Theophilus, will thus know more accurately how secure is the basis of the faith which they have been taught."God bless F.F. Bruce's work on New Testament reliability is concise, incisive, and persuasive. The content of this book is outstanding.However, Wilder Publications 2009 printing of Bruce's classic work is absolutely appalling. I honestly cannot believe that a publisher sent this copy to press with the number of errors, misprints, spelling mistakes, etc. that are contained. I have not yet read a complete page that was error-free, and ALL of the errors I have come across so far would have been easily identifiable through the use of a proofreader. A couple of examples: page 10, talking about the timeline of Jesus' ministry, Bruce writes that Jesus' public ministry would have commenced in September or October, AD 27.1. The Wilder edition presents it as "September or October, AD a7.1". A few pages later, while discussing the closeness of the NT manuscript tradition to the time of Christ, Bruce compares it to other ancient writings. At the top of page 13, the Wilder edition presents Bruce as writing: "For Caesar's Gallic War (composed between 58 and 50 BC) there are several extant MSS, but only nine or ten are good, and the oldest is some goo years later than Caesar's day." I don't know how many years "goo" is, but I suspect that it is 800. There are a few regularly-recurring errors: the word "in" is presented as "m"; there are random quotation marks that do not belong; words run into one another without a space between them. Occasionally letters are missing from words (e.g. Matta an logia instead of Matthaean logia), and sometimes entire words are missing from sentences.It appears that Wilder Publications ran an earlier edition of Bruce's work through a digital scanner, and sent the resulting copy directly to the printing press without ever running it by a proofreader. I tried to find an email address for Wilder Publications, or at least a phone number where I could relate my concerns, but came up empty. I will send them a letter to the post office box listed inside the book.Basically, Bruce's work is excellent; I can't recommend it highly enough. But do NOT buy the 2009 Wilder Publications edition of it. My 4th-grader could have done a better job of proofing it.
This is a fairly short but very deep study of the existing evidence for the truth reported in the gospels. Documentation for the life of Jesus of Nazareth, his teaching and death exists, written by believers and and non believers. The spread of Christianity is also documented by the apostles and those who considered it unfortunate and were disturbed that it had not disappeared yet. Collecting and comparing facts, is a surprisingly well supplied task.The Bible is a truth I believe in by faith. That there are so many existing pieces and evidence of historical fact based truth is an expansion in my belief.
