Vern Yip has designed his way across America, having reconfigured countless homes during four season's on TLC's Trading Spaces, NBC's Home Intervention, his own HGTV shows Deserving Design with Vern Yip and HGTV's Urban Oasis, and through his private practice Vern Yip Designs in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been a constant as a beloved judge on 8 seasons of HGTV's hit summer series, HGTV Design Star as well on his own special, Live In Vern's House. He has his own column in HGTV magazine and manages his own brand, Vern Yip Home, available at select retailers. I rarely write reviews, but I would like to write one for this book because I have found it to be VERY helpful and a joy to read! I have been a fan of Vern Yip for many years and I thought this would be a nice book showcasing his beautiful homes and I would ooh and ahh over his amazing designs. It did turn out to be that (of course it's Vern Yip) but SO MUCH MORE! Vern includes real life tips for every design aspect you can think of in your home. He tells you the numbers you need to know for sizes of furniture, lamps, etc and how high to place items on the wall based on the size of the room. For those of us who have not been to design school, all of the tips he has in this book allow us to put a room together and have it actually look nice! This book has been worth every penny, I would have paid more! It's like a cookbook for design, you can reach for it whenever you need guidance or a place to start.
I rarely feel compelled to post a review but this book has cured my "design paralysis!" In an eloquent, accessible and informative way, Vern Yip delivers the tools and information needed for the reader to create personalized, functional spaces with elegant form. From the mathematical formulas for aesthetically pleasing, as well as useful, furniture placement to practical tips on choosing countertop materials, organics, or lamp shades, each page is loaded with an abundance of informative text and beautiful demonstrative photographs. This book enables those of us who appreciate great design but feel ill-prepared to implement a design plan on our own to start making progress! I hope he will write another soon.
It really is a Design Bible... I think I may need two copies as I know that one will end up worn with continued use, but I still will want one out in pristine condition for friends and family to flip through. It's beautiful.From an inspiration point of view, this book is filled with amazing examples from every room in the house. What I personally love are the images that show how beautiful a room can look when you do things most normal people would not think of. For example, what do curtains that extend all the way to the ceiling look like? What should/could I put on end tables and coffee tables? What do layered pillows with multiple fabrics look like on a sofa? Where and how do I use small pieces of art and huge pieces of art? Can green apples really make my room look nicer? How can I use my books differently in the design of my rooms? How can different fabrics work in a room together? How should I use floor lamps, table lamps, and ceiling fixtures in a room together? Can I really put furniture in front of doors/windows? Should I consider putting something on TOP of my huge dressers/bookcases? How should I think about a wall with multiple photos/art on it? Are there options for my ugly shower curtain? Why should I consider painting stripes on my wall... Horizontal stripes? Vertical stripes? How can I showcase what I collect? Plants? What kind? You get the idea.From the Design Bible perspective, every number I wish I always had is in ONE PLACE. There are "CHEAT SHEETS" in the appendix that list everything from how far dining chairs should be separated when planning your room, to how much room you need to walk behind furniture, to how close should curtains be to the ceiling? (It's 0"... looks awesome too, as I eluded to above.) There are numbers for every room in the house, and all the info I need for upholstery and wood furniture. SOOOO helpful.In short (well medium), I LOVE THIS BOOK! Two thumbs up!
Where has this book been all my life? I've come to expect that design books will be full of luscious pictures of immaculately designed spaces--and this one certainly does that, in spades. But before you get to all that irresistible design porn, the first half of the book is full of the practical, accessible design wisdom that we've all come to expect from Vern. All of these essential questions (how do you size a rug for a room, how high do you hang artwork or a chandelier, etc.) are addressed in an easy-to-find, practical way. This isn't a design book that's just meant to sit on a shelf and look pretty. It's a working book...and it's working for me, already.So, by the time you get to all those gorgeous pictures in the back, you understand that they're illustrations of the design principles Vern has been laying out in the first part of the book. They're not just glamour shots--they're case studies. And, most charming, they're case studies based on his own life. I have bought a lot of design books in my life and this is the first one that feels really personal to me. Vern talks about his own career journey to design--and he shares his own home and family in the illustrations. Every photo in the book is taken from one of his homes, which makes this book not only a great encyclopedia of design, but also a charming glimpse into the private life of one of my favorite designers!
I found this book gave me so much information and detail in one volume! These are items I've always wanted to know, such as, how to properly calculate how large or small pieces of furniture should be, best rug sizes, best space between furniture pieces, when it's best (or not) to do install trim such as wainscoting. In decorating, I only know what I like and don't like; I don't have interior design skills. This is the first design book that conveys that information in numbers I can make sense of. Here is an example: I was debating whether or not to install wainscoting and/or ceiling trim. After reading Vern Yip's discussion and guidelines (I don't want to give them away), I realize it would've been a big mistake and I would probably not have liked the outcome! This terrific book was a lot less expensive than making the mistake! Love it!
