I picked up a few black & decker books from amazon prior to purchasing our first home. It's definitely a fixer upper. We knew there'd be trouble. Immediately there was. This book has allowed us to sail through the worries of shoddy plumbing with much greater understanding and the ability to do basic repairs. We still called a plumber for the big stuff, but at least I understood what he was doing.
Plumbing is 1/2 drains, and 1/2 supply lines. This book has 227 pages covering supply lines/repairs/tools/etc, but only has a few paragraphs on about 11 pages covering drain pipes.To be a complete guide, much more info on drains is needed. Many drain codes are not in this book, and could leave you on hot "water." :) :)If you are planning on working on drains, you'll need to buy an additional book: Black and Decker Codes for Homeowners.
I was pleasantly surprised by this whole line of books. I have bought quite a few because of this. I have done quite a bit of general carpentry but haven't worked in the field for quite a few years because of a career change. Looking to get back into it, I decided to try some books to sharpen back up before getting back to it. I was honestly expecting to be disappointed due to the tools of theirs that I have used, but was very happy with the strait forward and knowledgeable nature of these books. Well done.
Very informative supplied way more information than I needed. Served my purpose well. I imagine any handy man would find it useful to be able to carry out his "Honey Do" duties plus some big plumbing jobs you might want to undertake after reading. Very informative.
It's best if you have done some minor plumbing before. The book doesn't explain how to remove a push-pullbathroom faucet core, for instance, or go into any detail how to replace a garbage disposal. I'm giving thisbook to a friend that knows something about plumbing already. The complete book of home Wiring has amuch better method of instruction for that application. The book did show garbage disposal replacement, butdidn't go into enough detail for someone like myself who has very limited plumbing experience. Hence myrecomendation for someone with plumbing knowledge already.
This book won't make you a plumber, but there's so much information, and so many easy to follow, full-color illustrations, you can tackle most jobs yourself. If anything, you'll know what's involved with just about any plumbing issue that may arise in your home. This book is highly organized and informative. You'll easily understand (correctly) how to simply plunge a toilet all the way to how the entire plumbing system in your house works, and everything in between.
This is a well illustrated and good book for basic to slightly moderate experience projects. I only give it four stars vs. five, because I feel like it should have more than basic projects with more comprehensive information. (i.e. how to lay out plumbing beneath a new basement/house pad, step - by- step septic system installation.
This book fails to cover the basics. For example, the section for showers tells you to hire a plumber to run the drain line if you are not an experienced plumber. Why did I buy this book? If they had a detailed discussion of drain lines somewhere else that would be fine. But they don't. There are a few pictures in the introduction and a very brief overview. If you want any depth you are out of luck. "Hire an experienced plumber."
