I agree with the reviewer who found this book a little harsh. The advice is "old school" al-anon -- focused on the wife of an AA member. It's all about becoming more agreeable, not arguing with him, not complaining when he spends all his time in AA. If you are an adult child of an alcoholic, there is precious little advice for you here. You might want to check out HOPE FOR TODAY or COURAGE TO CHANGE.
If a loved one is having trouble with someone on drugs or alcohol, THEY NEED THIS BOOK. It helped me from being an enabler & showed me what tough love is. I needed this book years ago. Someone gave me a copy and my life is so much better now.Love the person but not their behavior.More importantly; Love yourself.
Though who provided harsh statements do not understand the problem or program of recovery. Recovery is a hard road for those who live in Denial. I am a child of Alcoholics any spouse of one. If you truly haven't worked to 12 steps you will not understand what is in this book. This book save my life as well as it gave it back to me. Sometimes when you hear the truth it can be harsh but we all contribute to the disease of Alcoholism Whether it's a wife husband child Uncle friend. What's written in this book is true experiences by people of lived with the effects of alcoholism. And those looking at this is an angry wife or the husband with a drinking problem you honestly truly do not understand the program and I would suggest getting to meeting. and learning as much as you can with the help of a sponsor
Every page jam-packed with life-changing wisdom. The Al-Anon program has changed me the way the 3 Spirits changed Scrooge (but it took a bit longer than one night). I have all 3 day-at-a-time books, this being the first. There is also Courage to Change and Hope For Today. I recommend them all.
It may well be the alcoholic who brings us to the support meetings which use the One Day At A Time handbook but it becomes the now iconic Steps and the fellowship which keep us there. As the pages of this, yes, blessed little book reveal themselves with quotations from some of the greatest souls who have frequented this planet, we painfully and gratefully see that the work of living with our "qualifier" is ours to do and the addiction that has seemingly ruined our lives has become a catalyst for inner growth and change. ODAAT remains consistent throughout and can be used by anyone who seeks even modicum of serenity in a world that is decimated by alcoholism and addictions. A precious humble work whose Steps and sage advices have been around since the fifties when alcoholism reared its ugly head in this modern world.
This is my favorite daily reader. It is a MUST HAVE book to keep me focused on my own healing journey and letting go of blame and resentments toward the qualifier.
This book will teach you one day at a time how to embrace each day with a new outlook on life. It will show you how to find your self worth while living with an alcoholic. It will help you understand how you can become a better person to yourself.
Although I thought this was a bit pricey I bought it anyway. I had one years ago and somehow lost it. It does have a lot of insight and encouragement for anyone living with or dealing with someone with an addiction problem. I dont think Alanon prints these anymore. Thats a shame because they really are helpful.
YOu can never say enough about the wisdom in and behind this book.
